Paul's Ministry and the Ephesian Disciples

Acts 19:1-22

Chapter 19
1 And it happened that while Apollos was in Corinth, Paul, having passed through the upper parts, came to Ephesus and found some disciples. 2 He said to them, "Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?" They said to him, "No, we have not even heard if there is a Holy Spirit." 3 And he said, “Into what then were you baptized?” And they said, “Into John's baptism.” 4 But Paul said, “John baptized with a baptism of repentance to the people, saying to them that they should believe in the one coming after him—this is Jesus.” 5 But when they heard this, they were baptized into the name of the Lord Jesus. 6 And when Paul had laid hands on them, the Holy Spirit came upon them, and they spoke in tongues and prophesied. 7 And they were all men, about twelve. 8 And after entering the synagogue, he spoke boldly for three months, debating and persuading concerning the Kingdom of God. 9 But when some were hardening themselves and disobeying, speaking evil of the Way before the crowd, he withdrew from them and separated the disciples, reasoning daily in the school of Tyrannus. 10 This now happened over two years, so that all the cultic ones dwelling in Asia heard the theological word of the Lord, both relational Jews and Greeks. 11 God was also doing extraordinary powers through the hands of Paul, 12 so that even handkerchiefs or aprons were carried away from his skin to the weak ones, and the diseases departed from them, and the evil spirits went out. 13 But some of the itinerant Jews, exorcists, also attempted to name over those having the evil spirits the name of the Lord Jesus, saying, “I adjure you by Jesus whom Paul preaches.” 14 But there were seven sons of Sceva, a Jewish high priest, doing this. 15 But the evil spirit answered them, "Jesus I know, and Paul I am acquainted with—you, however, who are you?" 16 And the man in whom the evil spirit was leaped on them, overpowered them both, and prevailed against them, so that they fled out of that house naked and wounded. 17 And this became known to all Jews as well as Greeks dwelling in Ephesus, and fear fell upon them all, and the name of the Lord Jesus was magnified. 18 Many of those who had believed also came, confessing and reporting their deeds. 19 But many of those who had practiced curious arts brought the books together, burned them before all, and calculated their prices and found them to come to fifty thousand pieces of silver. 20 In this way, according to the power of the Lord, the word grew and prevailed. 21 Now when these things were fulfilled, Paul resolved in the Spirit to go through Macedonia and Achaia to Jerusalem, saying, "After what will happen to me there, it is necessary for me to see Rome also." 22 But sending two of those who served him, Timothy and Erastus, to Macedonia, he himself stayed on for a time in Asia.
